In my family, we had “The Bird Story.” A story that my mom seemed to tell anyone who came over for dinner. It was a story I used to dread, but now I realize there are a couple of valuable lessons in this story. Before I get into “The Bird Story” let me give you a little background information first.

When I was 9 years old I got a green and yellow parakeet. Parakeets are the smallest of the parrot species. And the most popular bird to have as a pet because they are friendly and easy to tame. I named mine Polly. We later found out that Polly was a male. The way to tell is males have a blue spot right above their beaks. We evidently didn’t know that when I named him. I’m not sure why I wanted Polly, because quite frankly I’m not much of an animal or bird person. Maybe the Lord wanted me to have him so He could show me that he cares about our pets just like He cares about us.

I wanted to tame Polly so he would sit on my finger. One day I asked my mom to set his cage on the table so I could talk to and play with him. This is where “The Bird Story” begins.

The door to the cage was loose so when my mom moved the cage it came open and Polly flew out. My sister’s cat caught him and was running around with him in his mouth. The bird was limp. My mom was chasing the cat, swatting him to let go. She prayed “Lord let this cat let loose of this bird” and I said, “And let him be okay.” And instantly the cat dropped the bird and ran in the other direction. My mom picked him up and put him back in his cage. He was perfectly fine. The cat never bothered the bird again and Polly went on to live a long life and learned to say “Pretty bird,” “Kiss me quick,” and “Praise the Lord.

The bird was limp, and it was unclear whether he was dead or alive. Did God perform a miracle and bring him back to life? We may never know this side of Heaven. However, this story teaches us two important lessons. First, we should pray about everything, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. Second, God cares about every detail of our lives, including our pets. Sometimes, we may think that God doesn’t care about the small things in our lives and that we shouldn’t bother Him with trivial matters like the health of our pets or their lives. But, this story reminds us that God cares about even the smallest details, and He is always there to help us in our time of need. Just as He cared about the safety of the bird, He also cares deeply about you and your life.

I challenge you to talk to God about things in your life you don’t normally consider important enough to go to Him about. You might be surprised at what He does.
