The best way to give someone joy is by sharing Jesus Christ with them. However, there are physical ways you can give someone joy as well. We’re going to talk about some of them, and the people who need it the most.

The Incarcerated

Being in prison ministry, I once asked an inmate what someone could do to make his day. His response was “be his friend and not walk away without saying goodbye.” Letters go a long way, it’s like having a conversation on paper. You can offer moral and emotional support. Be their friend and encourage them. You could also set up a phone or email account and talk to them that way as well.

The Disabled

The disabled don’t always get out much. Taking them shopping or to lunch is always a good way to brighten their day. Visit them at their house, maybe play a game or watch movies. Or include them in activities of any kind. Sometimes you just have to think outside the box a little. Just be their friend.

Widows

Depending on how long it’s been since they lost their spouse, they might still be grieving. Taking them a meal and visiting with them might help lift their spirits. Giving them flowers or a small gift would be a welcome gesture to let them know you are thinking about them. Again include them in any activities you think they might enjoy.

New or Struggling Mother

Being a new mother or single mother can be difficult. Give them a gift certificate for a spa day or to get their hair done. Gift cards to get things like groceries, or diapers are always helpful. Offering to babysit while they go out for a couple hours. Are all ways to bring joy to their life.

Homeless

When dealing with the homeless a lot of times there’s some kind of mental illness involved. Mental and emotional support is always good. Buy them a meal or give them a care packet of hygiene items. You don’t want to just give them money because you don’t know what they will buy with it. Overall try to be there for them as much as possible.

The Best Kind of Joy

The best kind of joy is God’s hope.

But those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31
